Chapter Director:
Kelly Chacón,
Class of 2008, Yale '12.
"The mission of this program immediately piqued my
interest as an excellent way to share my sheer love of
science and knowledge with young kids," says Kelly.
She has been an active member of Breakthrough
Collaborative Ft. Lauderdale, which is an
after-school/weekend program for bright, yet
underprivileged middle school students. At
Breakthrough, they give these students the opportunity
to further their knowledge in a wide variety of
subject areas as they prepare for high school in an
accelerated learning environment. They attend classes,
taught by high school students, which focus on
advanced math and language arts skills. At
Breakthrough, Kelly is a teacher of advanced 6th grade
math and drama, and through this opportunity, she has
not only experienced the challenges of communicating
with and teaching young children, but also the
"unparalleled joys that go along with it". At American
Heritage, she is also a peer tutor of all math and
science levels. She is very active member of her
school's Pre-Med Society, of which she will be
President in the 07-08 school year. She is also
president of the science research - Florida Junior
Academy of Sciences Club, a position that entailed
organizing and coordinating the school science fair,
as well as participating in several other science fair
competitions, such as ISEF, SSEF, JSEHS, and FJAS.
Kelly is also an active member of the wind ensemble,
marching band, symphonic orchestra, and community
band. As Director of the ScienceDays chapter,
Kelly will combine science lessons with lessons from a
Nutrition awareness program at a local Boys and Girls
Club. |
