Xiaoli
Mi, Class of 2008.
"Science has always held a special place in my heart,"
says Xiaoli, "I am very passionate about science, and
I believe being able to spread interest in science in
my community and in the society would be a very
valuable opportunity and rewarding experience."
Xiaoli founded the first Boston chapter of
ScienceDays. At school, she is currently an
active member and Treasurer of the Science Team at my
school. She has competed in several
Science Olympiad tournaments and Science Bowl
competitions. She is also very
passionate about writing. She is currently
Assistant News Editor for the school newspaper and
will be promoted News Editor next year as a senior.
She will also be in charge of the science newspaper as
a senior. In addition, She is Treasurer for Roots and Shoots, an
environment service club at Boston Latin. She is
also a soprano singer for the school Concert Choir,
and in the past, she has been a long-distance runner
for the school's track and field team. In the
community, She currently serves as a 2007 Youth
Leadership Scholar for ASPIRE (Asian Student
Participating in Reaching Excellence). Along with
other ASPIRE Leadership Scholars, she raises awareness
of leadership in Asian American
females. Xiaoli spends a lot of time working on a
research project every year, and she has placed
first in the city twice (10th and 11th grade). She was
in Albuquerque, New Mexico in May 2007 to
represent Boston at the Intel International Science
and Engineering Fair.
Morgon
Banks, Class of 2008.
Morgon is
originally from Montreal but came to Boston in 2004.
At school, Morgon is the Vice-President of Student
Council, writes for the school newspaper, and is an
active member of the Pre-medical Society, the Honor
Code Committee, and Prom Committee. In addition,
Morgon is Boston Latin School's representative for the
Greater Boston Student Advisory Council and a state
delegate for the State Student Advisory Council, both
of which are groups that work with the Department of
Education to improve public education in Greater
Boston and Massachusetts. Morgon has always had
a love for science, primarily due to the exposure
through my parents' occupations as a nurse and a
chemist. Their teachings, as well as those from
school, have encouraged Morgon to pursue my interest
in various fields of science. For the two previous
summers, Morgon worked as a research assistant at
McGill University in a neuropsychological lab for
Fragile X Syndrome. Morgon believes that ScienceDays
is a great way to expose children to some areas of
science that they may not have learnt about, either at
home or in the classroom, to hopefully spark a life
long interest in science. |
