Chapter Director:

Cella Jones, Class of 2008.
In the
summer of 2006, Cella read an extensive article in Newsweek that showed just how far behind the U.S. is beginning to find itself in the grand scheme of the world’s scientific future.  She says, "One of the major factors pointed out was that the chances that an elementary school student has of being taught science by a teacher who actually majored in any kind of science field is less than 30%. And most teachers, the article went on to say, never even really enjoyed the subject while they were in school, and are therefore, unconsciously  and without meaning to, transferring this irrational fear and dread of science onto their students. It’s upsetting because the last thing that these well-meaning and hard working professional educators wish to be doing is scaring the children away from a subject, but they really just don’t realize they are. When I heard about ScienceDays I was extremely excited. This seems like it could really make a difference, a plausible and outstanding difference in the way the next generation views the sciences. I would be excited and honored to carry the ideas and principles put forth by ScienceDays into my community."   She also states that "persistence, dedication, and enduring enthusiasm towards the program will be the most essential strategies that I must remember to uphold in order to ensure success."  During the inaugural year, Cella recruited a core group of dedicated members with a few different members joining along sometimes. They found it was easier to work with the teachers to find time during school instead of after school because more students would participate, and also students who wouldn't normally be interested in the sciences would have an exciting introduction.   When Cella is not in class she enjoys getting outside and playing sports like soccer and lacrosse for her school’s teams. She is also a member of John Jay’s dance squad, She has played piano since she was 7, and she loves taking acting classes and doing theater at school. She was elected historian of her class’s Student Council and is active in clubs like Model UN, Yearbook, and Focus, the school newspaper.
