Chapter Director:
Nikhita Singh, Class of 2008.
"My source of interest in becoming a chapter director
revolves around my love for science and my experience
in working with children," says Nikhita, "by founding
a chapter in my city, it will be possible to show kids
that science can go beyond the classroom. Often,
students tend to feel that science and engineering are
dull. I have even observed a similar attitude with by
younger brother at times. However, when kids are given
the chance to see the significance of science in their
lives, they find it more interesting. Because this is
a student club, I feel it will be easier to relate to
younger kids. As high school students, we have been
through the same school system and can appreciate the
student perspective. Simply relating scientific
knowledge to popular themes can ignite interest. By
becoming a chapter director, I hope to foster
scientific knowledge in younger kids, in addition to
high school students. Within high schools, there is
little interest in science-related extracurricular
activities. I would like to organize events and
activities for high school students with this group to
show that science can go beyond the textbooks in our
classrooms. I feel that if, students are given the
chance to interact with professionals in the fields of
science and technology, they may consider a future in
that field. All in all, I feel that the fields of
science and engineering are often misunderstood by
students in both elementary and secondary school. By
initiating a Science Days chapter, I hope to show
students that science can be just as fascinating and
enjoyable as other activities." Nikhita has
volunteered at Indian National Association for the
Blind in New Delhi, volunteered as a gallery host and
craft manager at London Regional Children's Museum,
worked as a birthday party host/teacher/jewelry
designer at The London Beadery and volunteered as a
camp counselor at London Youth Sikh Camp. She
has also been involved with the science fair for the
past 4 years and have competed at ISEF. Last year, she
worked on a project at the University of Western
Ontario entitled Environmentally Friendly Delivery
System for Pesticides where she was able to decrease
pesticide runoff by over 80% by testing over 10
variables and developing a user friendly program to
implement these changes.
