Zhenhuan
Lei, Class of 2008.
Zhenhuan has long had an interest in both science and
service work. This year she served as a mentor for a
mentoring program at the Oregon National Primate
Research Center/Oregon Health and Science University
called Science Ambassadors and greatly enjoyed
teaching and working with kids and showing them "that
science is not only fun but something they could be
interested in pursuing later on as a career."
She has also served as a camp counselor for church
camp last summer at Sunset Presbyterian Church in
Portland, OR and read to kids and did camp activities
like playing scavenger hunts. She has also worked at
the Oregon Health and Science University-Oregon
National Primate Research Center this year as a mentor
for 5th graders and taught them about various
biomedical related topics to foster greater interest
in science through a program called Science
Ambassadors. This year, along with two
classmates, Zhenhuan wrote a grant proposal to the
Lemelson-MIT Foundation and received a almost $10k
grant to engineer a tactile graphing calculator screen
attachment for TI 84+'s to help the blind and visually
impaired. She was the leader of one of the 2 design
groups and helped found the team at school. She has
also done research at the Oregon Health and Science
University and will continue to work there this
summer. She recently carried her research project to
the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
