During the summer of 2008, ScienceDays
volunteers visited summer camps in the Triangle area in North
Carolina, as well as summer camps in the Cambridge-Boston Area.
ScienceDays is proud to partner with the Cambridge Youth Enrichment
Program in association with the
Philips Brooks House Association of Harvard College.
Lessons:
"Extracting DNA from strawberries" Taught and planned by: Meera Atreya and Vera Mucaj (Supplies: Soap, 95% ethanol or isopropanol, strawberries, baggies, rods/sticks, test tubes)
"Fun with Liquids. Part I: Lava Lamp in a Test Tube. Part II: Tye-dye Milk"

(Concepts: Hydrophilic, hydrophobic substances. Supplies: Water, Oil, Food Coloring, 50 mL plastic tubes, Alka Seltzer, Whole Milk, Soap)
"Chemistry Magic Show" Taught and planned by: Peyton Shieh and Allen Cheng
"Balloon Cars" Taught and planned by: Christina Li
(Idea: kids will be given a set of materials (cardboard, thread spools, straws, a balloon) to design and build their own balloon powered car. We'll then measure the distance it travels, and try to improve the design. We can also add weights to the car and have kids predict the distance it will travel. Concepts: Engineering/design, forces/Newton's Laws. Supplies: cardboard, heavy paper, drinking straws, balloons, wood skewers, thread spools (or other cylindrical items that can roll), tape, scissors, rulers)
